Think Rosemary's Baby, then add a reverse The Fifth Child, and you get this book. There was a lot of gritty slasher movie horror, and it did feel more like a movie than a book, especially the whole Eastern European mad scientist bit.

Doris Lessing had a more successful approach when it came to eliciting the sort of horror this book was going for: the atavistic process of reproduction and the complicated relationship between parent and child.

But it was an entertaining read, nonetheless.
