First Grave on the Right

First Grave on the Right -

Darynda Jones I really wanted to like this book but honestly, it's like the author tried to keep me from caring about anything and anyone in it. 98% of the dialogue is comprised of jokes that were the very definition of trying too hard and the main character seems incapable of communicating without being sarcastic. I like sarcasm, I like humour, but a whole book of nothing but sitcom one-liners? And quite frankly some jokes were of questionable taste... I know it's a case of "your mileage may vary" but referring to a mixed race character as a hybrid, then going on to try and guess exactly what sort of mix he is? Ask any mixed-race person how much they just love that shit. And making jokes about blind dates when a woman has been beaten unconscious? To each his own, I guess...Plus, the main romance starts oh so romantically with the "hero" choking and threatening to rape the main character which she, for reasons unknown (though I'm guessing they're related to his "hotness"), remembers fondly. And later he shows up repeatedly to have sex with her while she's asleep... are we supposed to find that hot? What the fuck.I'm giving it 2 stars because it does have potential, and there were a few moments that were somewhat amusing.
